My Final Poster

Again I have used the red colours to contrast. However on this moster you can see natural light, this picture is taken from the scene at the end of our trailer.

I have merged the characters face onto the picture for effect against the light background.

This picture is nothing like the picture on the front of the magazine, I think this gives the audience more insight of what the film is about, the area/surroundings.

The silhouette of the eerie tree shows that the theme and genre is thriller/horror.

My Final Magzine

This is my final magazine front cover. I used the red colour to contrast against the dark background. I have edited the sharpness and the saturation of the picture on adobe photoshop to give the magazine more effect.

The puffs I have used are the same colours of the title of the magazine and the masthead. This way the magazine looks more professional.

I used a popular film title EMPIRE as I feel this magazine went well with our theme/genre.

Trailer

Our final trailer can be found on Youtube.

Story Boards

We planned a story board to make our filming more organised and so we knew what angle to film from, what shot it would be, whether there was any graphic captions, what type of music was going to be used, etc.

Risk Assessment

Just before we started filming the trailer we had to carry out a risk assesment form which is a list of potential risks we might have to face when filming. We then gave them a low, medium or high rating, and came up with solutions to how these could be avoided.

This therefore meant how we could avoid any risks from happening.

Costume and Make-up

The costumes and Makeup we used were pretty simple for the two normal characters.

Tom Mckee :- Checked shirt, black jeans

Josh Hogan :- black jacket and jeans

For the torturer we used black clothing and a black scarf covering their face.

Psycho killer, Oliver Moore :- army wear, green vest, army camouflage pants, green braces.

The make-up we used on the Pyscho Killer was black eyeliner, which was smudged underneath his eyes to make him look scary and brown makeup used to look like mud and dirt on his face and arms.

Prop List

The props and the list of equiptment we used for the trailer:-

  • Camera

  • Tripod

  • Gun

  • lighter

  • rope/scarf

Actors List

Our main character who plays the Pyscho killer is played by Oliver Moore.

The character who dissapears throughout the trailer, and is captured it played by Tom Mckee.

The character who looks for Tom throughout the trailer is played by Josh Hogan.

The torturer who is seen in the first few scenes and later on when repeated in the trailer is played by Tom Mckee and Georgia Turner.

Locations

Our locations which we used for our film was The Abby Lydiate. This was where the filming of The two Characters take the wrong shortcut and 'Tom' is captured. We used this location as it has a very eerie feel, there is a lot of different locations around this place such as grave yard, broken down church, paths, fields and also Forrest.

The other Location was the stage in Deyes High School this was used for when the 'psycho killer' was tortured. We used this location as it was dark due to the black curtains and also we could adjust the lighting which is used on the stage.

Production Schedule

The production schedule for our trailer:

Thursday 15th April

Sunday 11th April

Analysis of the Dark Knight Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KGFG-PhPxs&NR=1

The official movie trailer 'Dark Knight' has an element of different types of genre including Action/Crime/Thriller. The trailer starts with a Birdseye view shot of batman swooping down off a building, so straight away there is an action element. This is followed by a few other Birdseye view shots giving the impression that someone is looking down. The trailer uses sharp cuts and edits of the film throughout.

The trailer starts with a shot of the productions company which is Warner Brothers. However the logo appears to have been edited rather than the light blue colour it has changed to a dark blue smokey colour to create an eerie, intensifying effect.

Throughout the trailer there are no graphic captions until the end when the title of the film is shown. Throughout the trailer the editing cuts appear faster towards the end this keeps the audience intrigued.

There are fades ins and outs throughout the film to create tention and also to switch the setting. The trailer ends with a graphic caption which is hardly used throughout the trailer showing when the film will be screening.

Analysis Of Dark Knight Magazine Front Cover

Empire magazine has used a picture of the Joker as their main image. It is a long shot of him sitting down, Empire magazine usualy uses long shots for the front page so you can see the full costume, hair and make-up, and so this gives the audience an immediate representation of the character.

The image is centred in the middle of the page which signifies its importance, which is a marketing technique. The character cover the 'Empire' writing at the front which also highlights the films importance.
The joker is sitting down upright with his head tilted dowmwards looking straight at the camera, this makes the audience feel intimidated almost as if the character is watching.

The costume which is purple and green is complimented by the puffs around the image which are also the same colours. The puffs on the left side show what other things are inside the magazine such as other films like 'I am legend'. The main tagline is 'Joker' which is obviously the name of the character in the picture. Underneath says 'one-on-one with Batmans new nemesis' showing that there is an interview with Batmans enemy.

The logo from batman, which is also presented in the poster is shown on the magazine at the top of the page. Around the logo it s says the title of the film 'Dark Knight' and on the other side 'World Exclusive' representing that the film is Universal.

Analysis of The Dark Knight Poster

The Dark Knight poster concentrates mainly on the long-shot of the Joker, on a slight tilt. The tilt of the long shot is very effective as the joker looks off balance and therefore unstable, this emphasises the chaos in the poster, eventhough there is no one else in the picture.

The colours which are provided in the picture creates an eerie atmosphere. The cloudy/misty surroundings in the background produces an evil ambience.

The title is in a small, bold font at the bottom of the page with the batman logo behind it. The fact that the title is in a smaller font provides more attention to the main image.

The list of actors are at the top of the page in white, the same colour as the title, in contrast to the image which is darker colours. This shows the audience the actors in the film as there is only one actor on the poster.

Analysis of Trailer - Shutter Island

The trailer for Shutter Island which is 2.30 minutes long, keeps the audience off their seats, and intrigued to watch more. The trailer uses clips from the movie all the way through, providing the audience with sharp edits and tense, non-diagetic music. Throughout the trailer there are graphic captions showing the directors name, Martin Scorsese and the main actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

The trailer starts with the shot of the production company which is paramount. However the paramount picture logo has been edited black and white, this follows the conventions of a horror film, and so the film immediately appears eerie.

The shots used in the trailer are mainly close-ups showing emotion, however the location shots are long. Through the trailer we also see birds eye view shots, showing the isolated island and showing the gates abruptly being closed.

The fade-ins and outs are mainly used in the first section of the trailer, as the tense music gets louder the cuts appear sharper and more intensifying, as the last cut fades out and there is a sudden/frightening shot of a hand appearing from the rocks, this leaves the trailer with no spoilers to the end of the film.

Shutter Island Magazine Front Cover

Total film have advertised the film Shutter Island taking the bright red Title from the poster. Total film, which is the second best selling film magazine in the UK, has displayed a long middle angle shot of Leonardo DiCaprio, the leading actor of the Martin Scorsese film.
The red from the title is also used around the magazine to advertise different puffs and tag lines, this emphasises the main film being advertised. The tag lines which are above and below the title 'inside Marty's madhouse' and 'Leo takes over the asylum' presents the audience with the information of the director, the main actor and the location of the film, being in a mental hospital.
The long shot in the middle of DiCaprio portrays a lonely character. The image shows his leg in front, with the light shining just above his knee emphasising the gun which is placed on his leg. The way the light is shone upon DiCaprio's face shows his strong jaw line and facial expressions presents his masculinity. Also the misty blue/grey colour around him illustrates a typical horror/thriller theme. The shot of the lighthouse is in front of the masthead, this gives dominance over the front cover and also shows this is important in the film.

Analysis Of Shutter Island

Shutter island is a thriller written by Denis Lehane in 2003, and has now been adapted from the novel into a film, directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Teddy Marshall (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule go to the Ashecliff Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. They are investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a patient who vanished from a locked room.
The poster automatically represents the thriller genre; the title, the scary looking island, and DiCaprio's facial expression.
The tag line 'Someone is missing' automatically brings mystery to the film, and therefore encourages the audience to want to find out more. The dull colours which surround the bright red title, make the title immediately emerge from the poster, red indicating danger, blood, anger, etc.
DiCaprio's facial expression seems concentrated on something else, as he looks very suspicious. His eyes stand out the most against the low saturated, grey colour of his face. This is a massive contrast against the blurry title. The flame comes directly from the film,it suggests darkness and eeriness, also the flame lights up DiCaprio's face contrasting another colour against the grey and black background.
The green/white glow around the island creates a feeling that something mystical is inside the island. The island which is surrounded by nothing but sea, in the middle of nowhere gives the poster a sinister feel. The rain effect in the front makes the island seem restless, indicating the film is suspenseful.

Introduction

For my A2 project I will be creating a package for a film, this includes;
  • Teaser trailer
  • A poster of the film
  • A film magazine front cover

My intentions are to research trailers, posters and magazine front covers to give myself an idea of what theme I want, and what makes it successful, for example the editing, music, scenery etc. Once i have an understanding of this i will be able to produce:

  • A production schedule
  • story boards
  • Actor list
  • Music list
  • Scouting images
  • Costume make-up requirements
